Child labor is an important issue facing many countries. Children have had their innocence stolen by this harmful and illegal practice. In India, there are more than 10 million working children under the age of 14 as per the 2011 Census. Children’s prospects of having a successful and promising future are getting potentially destroyed.
Every child should have the opportunity to grow in a secure atmosphere that fosters learning, but the cycle of child labor has the exact opposite effect. Poverty is one of the underlying factors for innumerable children in this type of child abuse. Families from marginalized groups decide against sending their children to school and educating them. They often prefer to have the child earn from a young age and contribute to the household income.
Children work in dangerous situations for meager pay while putting in long, exhausting hours. They are hired as helpers in settings that are unsuitable for them, such as industries, restaurants, or even as household help. Their emotional, mental, and cognitive development are impacted by this. Additionally, it has been observed that children who begin working at a young age rarely have a regular income in their later years, due to the damage to their bodies.
Census 2011 sheds more light on the fact that just 27% of children, or 8.9 million children, attend school simultaneously, even though there are 33 million working children in India between the ages of 0 and 18. Children learn, think, and develop in schools, while child labor drags them down due to abuse and exploitation, limiting their growth.
