Project IAWS

Campaign Story

About the project

IAWS strives to promote gender-just development in Jharkhand by engaging with and strengthening networks of feminist scholars, activists in universities, and civil society organizations. The organization works through the Centre for Women’s Studies at the University of Ranchi to produce high-quality literature, discourse and social actions. The repository of gender-sensitive, critical and interdisciplinary knowledge and resources that IAWS aims to consolidate will be available to students, NGOs, practitioners, teachers, and researchers.

This Project is fully funded by the Oak foundation.

Making a difference

IAWS recognizes that steering policy conversations toward a more woman-centric tone is a vital complement to the work of NGOs that provide direct beneficiary services. Through the Women’s Studies Centre (WSC), IAWS facilitated a number of public programs and lectures on women’s rights and gender equality. Programs included commemoration of International Women’s Day, regular interaction with research scholars, and a lecture series marking the birth anniversary of 19th-century women’s rights campaigner Savitribai Phule. The WSC coordinating team established the center’s library, compiled statistics and data on government policies, and created a catalog of videos, short films, documentaries, and narratives available on digital media. IAWS launched an internship program in 2021 targeting youth from diverse social backgrounds, and made inroads with a variety of NGOs that work on women’s issues, participating in workshops, training programs, rehabilitation and assistance work.

The Way Forward

Missing child reunited with the Family

A 17-year-old boy Mohhamad Shami lives with his family in Puranapul at Pulkohla. His father works in a powerloom factory in Varanasi.

One fine day, a missing child information was given to the SRF team, they quickly started spreading the word in the community and nearby locations. After a few days, Shami was identified when found at the Railway Station by the ChildLine team. Shami was tracked from the Railway Station and information was given to SRF as they were looking for the child along with the family. Same day Shami was sent to a shelter home run by SRF in the Varanasi district. Through a professional social worker counseling session he expressed the reason for leaving home. It was informed that the child had lost his eyesight at the age of 2 years due to severe illness because of which he couldn’t pursue his education.

During a counseling session with the child, it was revealed that Shami left the house in anger. Later after completing all the documentation, presenting the child to the child welfare committee, the child was sent back to home with parents. Currently, regular follow ups are done of the child by the SSRF team through home visits. SRF is also trying for his enrollment in school. Hopefully, very soon, the child will start pursuing an education and will be supported for his eye treatment too.
