Campaign Story

About the project

In many villages of Madhya Pradesh the Sahariya tribe resides. Due to poor financial conditions, the members of this tribe tend to ignore issues related to health. Most of the people are landless and so in the absence of sustainable livelihood or opportunities to grow their food, the Sahariya tribe has continued to languish in poverty. This also explains causative factors of alarming rates of Severely Acute Malnutrition (SAM), Moderately Acute Malnutrition (MAM) and large-scale anemia, particularly among women and girl children of Sahariya community.

From Fragile Beginnings to Nurtured Growth

Ramraj was born in Taparpura, Shivpuri district, during the pandemic. Due to the fear of the virus and lack of resources, his mother Anita decided to give a home birth. He was underweight and severely ill at the time of his delivery. His mother was also fragile as he was the 4th child, and she hadn’t received a nutritious diet during her pregnancy. Because of Anita’s weakness, Ramraj remained deprived of the mother’s first milk (colostrum), which is very healthy and vital for a child’s development. The situation did not change even after 6 months.

When an ASHA worker and a team member of CRY came to know about it, they intervened and counselled his mother. They advised her to admit Ramraj to the Nutrition Rehabilitation Center (NRC). She was reluctant about it because of fear of loss of wages. They assured her that she would receive compensation in lieu of loss of work. He was admitted for 11 days, and during his time in the hospital, his weight increased by 200gms.

To provide a sustainable nutritional solution to the family, CRY introduced them to a scheme of poultry farming. To fulfil the need for proper nutrition for the entire family and earn income by selling the eggs. The family was also supported by the kitchen garden. They were taught to grow local vegetables such as bottle guards, tomatoes etc. They were also given a ration to provide a nutritious diet to all the children and parents.

Ramraj’s weight is 6.4 kg, and his height is 61 cm. He came to normal from the severe acute malnutrition category. He is doing better now with constant care and proper nutrition.
