About the Project Andaman and Nicobar Islands - Direct Intervention

About the project

Four hamlets in the Middle Andaman and Little Andaman Islands are home to over 1004 households with approximately 1614 children. Lack of infrastructure and financial support are major factors contributing to child dropouts. Limited access to higher education and poor parental interest in completing their children’s education further compound the issues, leading to child labor and child marriages. Many children in these hamlets engage in fishing to support their families. Additionally, the vicious cycle of poverty severely impacts their health, with many suffering from malnutrition; 67% of girls aged 10-19 years are anemic. CRY America aims to provide adequate educational facilities, nutrition awareness programs, and healthcare access to 4 villages in Port Blair.

Making a difference

CRY America Project Direct Implementation Andaman & Nicobar Islands, is working to facilitate education and encourage the re-enrollment of dropout children. Key activities include identifying dropout children, forming children collectives for community impact, organizing support classes and running awareness campaigns to counsel parents on encouraging education and reducing malnutrition through better home management practices.

Anil swaps shorelines for schoolbooks

The Fishermen Colony in Andaman primarily depends on fishing for its livelihood. Due to limited educational opportunities and a lack of awareness, the value of education is often overshadowed by the community’s immediate need for survival.

Anil*, a 13-year-old boy from one of the hamlets in Andaman, dropped out of school in the 6th grade to support his single mother by collecting seashore waste. Upon learning about his situation, CRY America’s project team promptly intervened through a home visit. They educated Anil’s mother about the long-term benefits of education, stressing on the harmful effects of child labor. Further, to ensure Anil’s sustained return to school, the team committed to supporting him with essentials like school supplies, books, stationery, and a uniform. After consistent follow-ups, Anil’s mother was finally convinced, and with the support of the project team and local education authorities, Anil was successfully re-enrolled in the 7th grade.

Today, he attends school regularly, excels in his studies, and is paving a future full of dreams and possibilities.
