Project Society for Rural Agriculturalists and Mass Awareness (SRAMA)

Campaign Story

About the project

The Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) program faces challenges in effective implementation due to the limited infrastructure and manpower in the Anganwadi Centers. Although there are primary and upper primary schools in the region, numerous challenges prevent children from attending school, including the lack of school buildings, poor maintenance, and a shortage of classrooms. The absence of adequate higher secondary schools in the area forces adolescent boys and girls to either engage in child labor or get married at an early age.

Making a difference

CRY America’s Project SRAMA is working towards providing quality education to children and keeping them out of the vicious cycle of child labor and child marriage. Key activities under the project include identifying children with irregular school attendance and taking measures to reintegrate them, sensitizing parents of school dropouts on the importance of education, and engaging with community stakeholders including village secretariats, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) and Community-Based Organization (CBO) members on child rights and protection issues. Another important activity is the formation of Children’s Collectives and Adolescent Collectives to raise awareness within the community about child protection issues.

The path of Illaraja and a village that chose change

In the remote villages of Narayana Lanka in Andhra Pradesh, fishing and chegodi (a traditional snack) making are the main sources of livelihood for community members. Due to its quick preparation and low production cost, children are often preferred to work in chegodi manufacturing units.

Illaraja*, a 17-year-old adolescent boy, was supporting his family by working part-time in chegodi production. Eventually, he became irregular in attending his second-year intermediate classes as he got fully involved in the work, abandoning his education.

When CRY America’s project team noticed Illaraja’s absence from Children’s Collective meetings, they intervened immediately. They sensitized his family about the long-term value of education over child labor. With the involvement of Anganwadi Workers and the local police, the team further emphasized the benefits of schooling. Eventually, his family was convinced, and ensured his regular attendance at junior college.

The project team also visited the chegodi manufacturing unit, where they educated the stakeholders on the health risks and legal consequences of child labor. As a result, the plant was declared completely child-labor-free.

Today, Illaraja attends junior college regularly and has permanently left the workforce. With the continued support from CRY America’s Children’s Collective, the team consistently monitors him and other children in the community to ensure they prioritize education instead of returning to the mills they once worked in.
