Project Shramika Vikasa Kendram (SVK)

Campaign Story

About the project

In the Nagarkurnool and Wanaparthy district of Telangana children are dropping out of school and are involved in painting, construction, cleaning and electrical work. Girl children are married off over concerns for their safety or to reduce the family’s economic burden.

Making a difference

The project works at changing attitude towards preventing practices of child labor and child marriage. Children’s families also receive support through being connected to Job Cards, Public Distribution System and other government schemes to make them financially stronger. Anganwadi centers are monitored and parents were sensitized on the importance of continuity of education. The project works at identifying child labor and mainstreaming them in school while also implementing life skill modules at children’s collectives.

The way forward

● Transform 10 Anganwadi centers into Model Anganwadi Centers
● Orient 456 parents on the importance of Early Childhood Education (ECE) programme
● Monitor 89 Anganwadi centers
● Ensure re-enrolment of 44 dropout children
● Strengthen 23 Parents Monitoring Committee
● Prevent 62 child labor and 40 child marriages
● Conduct life skill session for 1500 children through children collectives
● Promote role models from 5 child collectives

Reviving Access to Education: Bringing Bus Services to Rural Villages

In small villages in the CRY operational areas, the absence of public transport made it difficult for families to send their children to school. They had no choice but to rely on private transport, which was often expensive and unsafe. Children who wanted to pursue higher studies had to stay in hostels, and those who did attend school often faced irregularity due to the lack of transportation options.

The project team identified this issue and discussed it with the Village Child Protection Committees (VCPCs) and Community Based Organisations (CBOs) during meetings. Advocacy efforts were initiated by the team, VCPC members, and CBO members. Two requisitions were given to the Depot Managers asking for special bus services in the morning and evening for children in 52 villages. The efforts were moving towards some development when the pandemic hit.

When schools reopened, the bus facilities to 7 villages were not revived. Due to the lack of access to public transport, 15 children dropped out. The team identified this issue and made a fresh set of requisitions along with data related to child labor, dropouts, and irregular children. Advocacy efforts continued by consulting with the Sarpanch and Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency. The team also managed to draw the attention of the press.

Finally, the concerned officials responded favorably by restarting bus services during school timings. Public transport was once again accessible and now, 90 boys and 100 girls from these areas are benefiting from the change in bus timings.
