Thematic Intervention: Protection

Project Context

Sankalp Manav Vikas Sansthan was established in 1992 in Parbhani region for lending voice and support to the oppressed Dalit women and children. The organization is offshoot of Rural Development Center’s activities to be broadening in other Marathwada region under campaign for human rights. Now the project is spreading its campaign in Parbhani, Aurangabad, Jalna, Hingoli districts in Marathwada Region. The organization, since its inception, has taken up the cause of marginalized communities particularly migrants, exploitation by sugar cooperatives, gender atrocities, child education and child labor. Mr. Sudhakar Kshirsagar, the project holder of SMVS is well aware of socio-economic situations in Marathwada region and in Parbhani district. He has not only strengthened the organization but also strategized regional networks in their work at grassroots level. The project operates in 60 villages of Pathri, Manvat and Selu Taluka of Parbhani District and 10 villages of Udgir taluka in Latur District. CRY supported intervention area is spread across 40 villages.

Achievements & Impact

Key Result Areas Achievements

Ensure reduction in child marriages across 20 villages of Mawat, Pathri of Parbhani district.

* 8 village passed resolution on prevention of child labor.
* 16 meetings done on starting support classes across villages to support child labors and mainstream them into schools to prevent school drop outs and getting in to child labor.
* A total of 7 children enrolled in the Children’s home with the help of VCPC, and another 2 child labor cases were referred to VCPC and CWC.
* Ensured, 203 children from 80 target families continued their studies in 10th and 12th class

Ensure reduction in child labor from 20 villages of Mawat, Pathri of Parbhani district.

* Capacity building sessions were conducted in 4 villages on issue of child marriage with adolescent girls group.
* 28 awareness meetings were conducted with the community based organizations on the issue of child marriage.
* 9 girls were enrolled in to government hostel.
* 5 girls said no to child marriage. The project is working with them closely to develop them as role models.
* 80 families have been identified for focused intervention to ensure their daughters enter higher education and save from child marriage. As a result, 203 children are appearing 10th and 12th board exam.

Other Highlight Processes and Achievements – 2017.

* Sankalp had developed it credibility as child protection expert at the block and district level. As a result, Sankalp staffs are invited by various district level departments and officer such as DCPU, labor department, CWC, JJB etc, calling on as the expert on child protection issues. The project staffs have also been enrolled as institutional member in various committees like village and block level Child Protection Committees (VCPC).
* Adolescent groups conducted 8 programs and created awareness on importance of education and preventing children from becoming child labor.
* Sankalp team have worked closely with adolescent girls groups and conducted a vulnerability mapping was done wherein 331 girls in the age group of 12 -18 years were covered under various categories. In order to motivate girl children to go for higher education Sankalp is also working closely with School Management Committee, school authorities and linking them with various government schemes and supporting their higher education.

Update on knowledge and capacity building workshops that the project team may have organized /participated in them (this is for the project team and not for the community groups):

During the reporting period, Sankalp team built their own capacity on the issue of child labor as well as child marriage, by organizing in house discussions as well as calling experts to lecture them on the legal provisions of child labor, various structures under CLPRA act.


Key Result Areas Program Activities Planned

Ensure 100% enrolment and retention of children in 6-18 years age group in schooling.

* Track children from in project area to ensure all children are enrolled in school.
* Work with schools to identify irregular children and engage with their parents to ensure, they do not drop out.
* Identify children who are likely to migrate and getting in to seasonal migration and prevent them though Hungami vasti gruh.
* Facilitating raising of demand of Hungami vasti gruh by SMC and VCPC committees; and ensuring girls are continuing education
* Monitoring of Hungami vasti gruh on 5 parameters: Food / time schedule / study time / services.

* Complete Migration survey and Facilitate Demand for Hungami vasti gurh (seasonal hostels) with the help of Village Child Protection Committee, and School Management Committee (SMC) members.
* Work with adolescent groups and link them with various government scheme to prevent school dropout as well as prevent them from becoming child labor
* Organize awareness campaigns on prevention of child labor across 20 villages.
* Train Village child protection committee (VCPC) on the issue of child labor.
* Develop Model village child protection committee and Hungami Vasti gruh

* Work closely with various committees under Child Marriage Act, Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS), and Children Welfare Committee (CWC) etc. who can play significant role in prevention of child marriage, to strengthen institutional mechanisms.
* Work with identified 100 families to develop role model to prevent child marriage and supporting higher education of girls.
* Collect information on various schemes available for adolescent especially for girls to motivate them for higher education and prevent child marriages.
* Organize awareness campaigns with Mahila Mandals, Adolescent groups, Community Based Organizations (CBO) etc. on prevention of child marriage.
* Motivate all Village Child Protection Committee (VCPC) to report Child marriage if any takes place in the village.
