The Social Development Center (SDC) is a group of like-minded people who are energetic and keenly interested in community development. The members of the organization are all local people who work voluntarily for the development of their state. SDC was established in the year 1990 and registered under Manipur Societies Registration Act, 1989. The organization started working through the networking process and was involved in building people’s capacity on the issues like health, socio-economic development, human rights, gender education and peace promotion programs. Mr. Lamabam Pishak Singh is the Project Holder of SDC. He was the Secretary of the ‘All India Students Federation, Moirang Council’ and has also become a trainer for LCP (Local Capacity for Peace) on gender and conflict analysis under the United NGO Mission-Manipur (UNM-M). He has also been involved in Manipur Alliance for Child Rights in Bishnupur district.


SDC is working in the peripheral area of the Bishnupur, Senapati and the Churachandpur districts of Manipur state covering 32 Panchayats and 300 villages. Assets are mostly owned by the government and involve two types of beneficiaries – direct and indirect beneficiaries. Direct beneficiaries include the rich, the educated, the influential and government employees. Indirect beneficiaries include the land-less, people who do not have any capital and daily laborers. Most of the marginalized families are land-less, and are laborers in other peoples farms, fish or vegetable sellers and rickshaw pullers. The daily wage earners in agriculture as well as non-agriculture sectors do not get appropriate and sufficient wages. There are very few opportunities for alternative employment in the community. Due to corruption and lack of proper monitoring mechanisms, the government social welfare schemes are not in place nor are they effective. The people of Manipur are facing acute political unrest because of the existing political differences and the need to protect the boundary of the state. This causes violence throughout the year and children and women are worst affected.


  • To building and strengthen community based organizations, people organizations, voluntary organizations, women’s groups and self help groups using the rights based approach.
  • Building capacity of the people to respond to injustice.
  • Understanding the situation and impact of globalization, gender inequality, Armed Forces Special Power Act and the arms conflict for long term intervention to establish peace and harmony.
  • To form community platforms for collective action without violence to ensure human rights and values.
  • More alignment with the Alliance [MACR] to raise their voice against exploitation and child rights violations.

Review and Impact

Social Development Center is working in the field of community development and people’s empowerment for establishing justice and equality in non violent ways for the last 6 years. The organization has strong links within the community and is close to people at the grassroots level. SDC has been able to create an environment within the community that is child friendly.

Highlights in the review period include:
  • 579 children were immunized.
  • 54 older births were registered.
  • 290 children were covered through pre-primary education support.
  • 27 child trafficking cases were blocked and the children rescued.
  • 16 rescued children were mainstreamed into government schools.
  • 37 child laborers were identified and rescued.


  • Development of a functioning Children’s Center at the community level for providing a child-friendly atmosphere and a platform for child rights debates, cultural programs, and formation of children’s clubs.
  • Organizing children’s cultural programs at the community level for creating a culture for recognizing the talent of children and also promoting the learning process from the children.
  • Capacity building with the youth on holistic child rights issues.
  • Community level collective action for activation of schools through the involvement of village education committees.
  • Organizing media campaigns as an advocacy tool for activation of education institutions.
  • Perspective building among the youth and developmental workers on child rights.
