SPREAD was founded by Mr. Bidyut Mohanty along with some likeminded people in 1989 with a commitment to work for the betterment of the underprivileged population with a focus on the development of tribals in Koraput district of Odisha. In the initial years of the intervention, the project team focused on the problems of the displaced tribal population, those who have been deprived of their homes and livelihood due to loss of land and common property to make way for a major hydro-electric project, Damanjodi by NALCO. With the insights gained from this intervention, the organization expanded its work to the displaced communities of two other projects, Kolab and Machhkund. Mr. Bidyut Mohanty, the Project Holder has been working in the development sector for the last 15 years on the issues of gender, participatory approach, advocacy and program monitoring and evaluation. He started work with dalit children in the slums in Bhubaneswar and has been associated with 'Agragami' on the issues of tribals.


Koraput district is located in the backward Koraput- Bolangir- Kalahandi (KBK) region of Odisha. The district is predominantly populated by scheduled tribes and falls under the scheduled area. All the blocks are Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) blocks. The tribes which pre-dominantly populate Koraput region are Kandhas, Sauras, Sabras, Bhottoda, Bhumiyas, Parajs, and Gadabas. Literacy rates are below the state and national averages. Female literacy is only 25%. PDS and other social security schemes are defunct. The Panchayat Raj Institutions in the region are not active. Operational area has 60% of tribal population. 35% children are malnourished. The tribal community is not able to link this education process with their way of livelihood for survival and hence is moving out from elementary education. Economic constraints are another reason for drop outs. Children are involved in household, agriculture and animal husbandry work.


  • To ensure livelihood through rights over land and access to entitlements to the excluded groups thus ensuring child rights.
  • To reduce malnutrition among 0-6 age group children for improvement of physical & mental health.
  • To ensure quality education and introduce teaching of local tribal culture & systems in the formal education system.
  • To promote awareness among men and women to counter the social evils like untouchability, caste, dowry, bride burning, drug abuse prevention, prohibition etc.

Review and Impact

SPREAD is working in the backward villages of Koraput district in Odisha with focus on issues of development of displaced tribal communities. Since inception they have been addressing livelihood issues for these communities to ensure overall development for them and their children. Some achievements in the review period include:

  • Ensured land patta entitlements to landless families of the project village.
  • 6 village meetings held and 2 GP level trainings conducted for the beneficiaries.
  • Interface with the Block Disctrict Officer to get work and payment on right time for six times.
  • BPL Survey process conducted at GP level where there were 78 participants.
  • 53 malnourished children were given additional dry food from the ICDS centres.
  • 1 school was developed in Badakichab as a model school.
  • Regular follow up done for ensuring quality education in 6 out of 7 schools.


  • Regular weight tracking of 473 children in 24 project villages for identification of actual health status and ensuring benefits through the ICDS.
  • Training of Anganwadi workers, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA), members of mother committees on ICDS services. Identification and capacity building of the mother committee members.
  • Highlighting issues of malnutrition and low birth weight in the area and advocate for better ICDS cervices.
  • Ensuring proper prescribed pre-school and cooked food distribution services in 7 AWC's in the project area.
  • Promote inclusion of the document on tribal culture and practices as teaching text in the schools situated in the tribal areas of district.
  • Developing 4 model schools in 4 operational villages in terms of - 100% enrolment, no drop outs through the year, regularity in attendance, proper infrastructure prescribed under SSA with school boundary, drinking water & toilet facility, clean school environment, quality mid day meals and quality teaching learning materials.
